The new iPod classic is a huge disappointment with only one positive note. When Apple had their live music event last week, Apple should have trimmed the scroll wheel to the size of the nano’s wheel, increased the screen size, or increase memory capacity beyond 160GB. Instead they failed to do everything that would improve the iPod classic. Yes, we now have a 160GB model as oppose to the 120GB model. However, the 160GB model was already released two years ago despite the fact that it was a bit on the bulkier side. On top of that, the black model still has that cheap AWFUL looking plastic casing on the top that seems to have been manufactured at a dollar store. The iPod is a decent MP3 player and its ease of use is great. But its flaw comes in the fact that its failed to EVOLVE properly. The Zune atleast has a huge 3.2 inch screen while the iPod size has remained the same. Another sad note is that Apple of course has gone ahead and poured all their creative ideas into the iPod Nano by giving them those great fashion colors and now they even have the luxury of a built in camcorder that records video in High Def from what i hear. The videos can also easily upload to Facebook or YouTube. Plus, the Nano now has a FM Radio.
If Apple couldn’t provide the Classic model with Fashion colors they could have at least given this so-called new model a built in camera/camcorder or the FM Radio. Apple, does this make any sense?

While the ipod classic is easy to use, the quality isn’t up to snuff. After only 4 months of use, it started skipping out of tracks in the middle of a track to another track. I checked online and this problem is not unheard of. Unfortunately, none of the recommendations to fix this problem worked for me. Repairing the ipod costs as much as getting a new one, so I’m out over $200. My husband has had a Microsoft Zune for 3 years now and has had no problems.

For reference, my son has a micro-click-wheel shuffle, wife had an old ipod mini (gen 1 or 2), and I’ve still got a gen 3 ipod (plastic face, no seams, 4-buttons at the top). I’ve also been assimilated and we’ve got 2 iPhone 3G in the family (wife and I as well).
I was very close to buying a iPod Touch 64GB (even had talked the wife into letting me buy it) . . . I just couldn’t rationalize the expense. You can buy an iPhone AND the iPod Classic for the same price, so I just bought this . . . I may get the iPhone 4G when it comes out next year (or whenever) as a companion.

I have a 40GB collection of music; some of it purchased MP3s but most of it is my 600+ CDs that are in the basement ripped at 192kbps MP3s. I’ve been really tempted to rip them at AAC quality, and this was a good size to do so.
GOOD STUFF!
The 7th gen iPod is thin, the dimensions are the same as the 6th gen 120GB and the 5th gen 80GB (the 5th gen 160GB is much thicker, so if you’re looking for cases, see the other two models).
The screen is very bright, crisp, the sound is properly reproduced (early iPods had problems with bass but haven’t had that problem for years). My AVIC-D3 (Pioneer car nav) works properly and charges with the same cable as my old iPod (video does NOT play, that’s a known incompatibility with the unit).
The sexiest feature is something I read years ago but forgot about — it allows for a full-sized backup of iPhoto. I’m sort of lazy about duplicates and that’s 40GB as well . . . it took a while, but I’ve got a portable backup that was “free” since I had the device anyhow.
BAD STUFF!
As I mentioned, the click wheel kills this product. It was apple’s “stroke of genius” and trademark interface, but enough is enough. They could have really pushed the envelope and turned this into another great product in a couple of ways:
1) The click wheel takes a while to get used to — learning curve is slightly higher than the 4-button interface of the gen 3, which was splash proof and made use of the space available.
Yes, I know, that seems like I’m complaining that it’s not what I’m used to . . . but that brings us to thought 2:
2) It wouldn’t have been much stroke of genius to put a touch-pad down on the lower-half. The same one they were using on the last generation of PowerBooks or the advanced one they’ve got on the new macbooks would have really made the interface more useable (like the touch/iPhone) without adding as much cost (seriously, $50 more at most?)
I’m definitely a “late adopter” on the iPod Classic and that was intentional. The click wheel was good for the mini, nano and shuffle (the new shuffle is just . . . goofy) . . . but the real-estate could have been used better, the learning curve is sort of awkward (especially if they want to get people to “upgrade” to a touch later, what’s the point of learning this?).

In the end, I decided not to list capacity as a detriment; I had anticipated a 200GB model, which would have been welcome, but doing the research, that would have changed the size of the body, and that’s one thing I was happy to find . . . lots of protective cases available.
